Empowering Youth through Design
Jordan Brand Wings, a program initiated in 2015, aims to dismantle barriers hindering young individuals from accessing educational opportunities. Central to this initiative is the Design Program, a platform that nurtures creative talents among students, serving as a springboard for their aspirations in design, entrepreneurship, or social impact projects rooted in their local communities.
Over the span of six weeks, more than 130 high school students hailing from Jordan Brand Wings partner organizations across the nation participated in the design process. Guided by Jordan Brand’s product-creation team, these budding designers were tasked with conceptualizing an Air Jordan I that embodies the theme of “role models,” weaving personal narratives and celebrating local figures who inspire their dreams.
A Symbol of Gratitude
Amidst fierce competition, one design emerged triumphant: the Air Jordan 1 Mid Subway, representing the spirit and resilience of NYC’s MTA workforce. Adorned with inspirational messages such as “Always Go Forward” and “Thank You For All You Do,” this sneaker serves as a token of appreciation for the relentless dedication of MTA employees in facilitating the city’s daily commute.
Oscar Chun, one of the student designers behind this remarkable creation, expresses his pride in knowing that individuals across the city will don the Air Jordan I Mid Subway. “Now I know what it must feel like when musicians hear their songs on the radio for the first time,” he shares, reflecting on the profound impact of seeing his design come to life.
