Seiko 5 Sports is commemorating its 55th anniversary this year and has teamed up with Masked Rider, a popular television show that has been captivating audiences since 1971, to celebrate the occasion.
The original Masked Rider storyline follows the protagonist, Takeshi Hongo, as he is captured by the nefarious organization “Shocker,” which has plans to take over the world. Hongo undergoes surgery to become a warrior for the group but manages to escape before his brain is remodeled. He then chooses to fight as Masked Rider 1, alongside Masked Rider 2, Hayato Ichimonji, to defend the world against Shocker’s monsters and Gel Shocker. This battle between the “Masked Riders” and the “Evil Organization” has been ongoing ever since.
For this collaboration model, Seiko has upgraded the design of the original watch worn by Hongo, incorporating modern materials and technology, while also incorporating design cues from Masked Rider.
The dial of the new collaboration watch is inspired by the helmet of Masked Rider 1, featuring color and pattern that reflect its design.
The lining of the calf strap pays homage to the iconic red scarf worn by Masked Rider 1.
The glass case back features the Tachibana Racing logo, which is also used in the design of the motorcycle and belt in the television series. The case back is engraved with “Limited Edition” and the serial number.
To mark the collaboration, the watch comes enclosed in a specially designed box with overlapping acrylic plates that display the watch’s specifications.
