The PENTAX K-3 Mark III Monochrome is a specialized camera designed for photographers who value the traditional principles of SLR cameras and the beauty of monochrome photography. Monochrome photography is the original form of photographic expression that emphasizes form and texture through light, shadow, and gradations. The camera features a monochrome-specific image sensor that captures brightness data of the light passing through the lens, resulting in extra-fine monochromatic expression in high resolution and rich gradation.
Unlike typical color image sensors, which use color filters to detect only one color data component per pixel and require an interpolation process to convert color data into monochromatic data, the monochrome-specific image sensor faithfully reflects the brightness data obtained by each pixel without the interpolation process. This results in minimal data deterioration and optimal visual expression, with a natural bokeh effect, rich gradation, and extra-fine sharpness.
The PENTAX K-3 Mark III Monochrome features three Custom Image modes exclusively designed for the monochrome-specific image sensor: Standard, Hard, and Soft. Each mode provides minute adjustments of parameters such as tone, key, contrast, and sharpness, allowing photographers to personalize images for their desired finishing touch.
The camera’s LCD data panel on the upper panel features white backlight illumination, and the Monochrome lettering is printed on the upper-left shoulder of the back panel. The camera’s User Interface menu features a black-and-white color scheme as default, while the SR (Shake Reduction) badge is finished in silver. The icons printed on buttons and switches across the camera’s exterior are finished in three shades of gray to assist users with camera operation.
The PENTAX K-3 Mark III Monochrome incorporates an advanced SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism that lets photographers use all types of lenses, from the latest to vintage, to capture sharp, blur-free images while optimizing the distinctive visual expression of each lens.
The camera’s design is based on the PENTAX K-3 Mark III flagship model, which integrates remarkable imaging performance and advanced features in a compact, durable body. However, the PENTAX K-3 Mark III Monochrome has a new monochrome-specific image sensor that optimizes the imaging characteristics of monochrome photography.
In addition, the camera’s high-performance viewfinder uses high-refraction glass pentaprism to provide approximately 1.05 times magnification with an FA 50mm F1.4 lens set at infinity. Despite its compact, lightweight APS-C-format SLR body, the viewfinder delivers a truthful, wide-view image equal to that of a full-frame SLR, immersing photographers in the photo-shooting process.
The PENTAX K-3 Mark III camera is equipped with numerous features that enhance its photographic capabilities. With the optional O-GPS1 GPS Unit attached, the camera can capture stunning images of celestial bodies without the need for an equatorial platform. The GPS unit provides data that allows the camera to accurately calculate the movement of celestial bodies and adjust the image sensor accordingly, resulting in clear and sharp star images.
The camera also offers creative tools such as Depth-of-field Bracketing and Motion Bracketing, which automatically shift the aperture and shutter-speed settings to produce a set of three images with varying levels of bokeh or motion effects. The Clarity Control function is another useful feature that allows for adjustments to the smoothness of a subject’s surface, emphasizing details like the texture of metals or the transparency of water.
The HDR (High Dynamic Range) function enables the camera to produce a single composite image for scenes with extreme highlights and shadows without any overexposure or underexposure. Additionally, the camera’s Multi-exposure mode creates a single composite image from multiple images, and the Interval Shooting and Interval Composite functions automatically capture and synthesize multiple images at user-selected intervals.
The PENTAX K-3 Mark III also includes a range of image-editing tools, such as Composition Adjustment, Level Correction, and White Balance Control. The camera provides 18 digital filters to add unique visual effects, and up to seven filters can be applied to a single image. The camera’s AF customization allows for the selection of desired AF modes and functions based on subject motion and photographic conditions.
The Auto Horizon Correction and Fine Composition Adjustment functions take advantage of the camera’s SR mechanism to automatically compensate for horizontal and vertical tilts and rotational directions. The Lens Correction feature compensates for distortion, vignetting, lateral chromatic aberration, and a drop in resolving power caused by diffraction.
Finally, the PENTAX K-3 Mark III allows for in-body development of RAW-format image files, saving them as separate JPEG or TIFF files. This feature allows for the addition of desired visual effects and adjustments to lens properties, white balance, and other parameters of the Custom Image modes.
