Unique and One-off Bentley Continental GT Azure

The R-Type Continental was considered a style icon when it was first released in 1952, and it was also the fastest four-seat luxury saloon in the world at the time. The three key design lines of the car – the power line from the front wheel, the rear haunch, and the roofline – have been inspirations for every Continental GT model since 2003.

The new Continental GT Azure continues to celebrate elegance and timeless design, while also focusing on the wellbeing of the driver and passengers.

The new Continental GT Azure has been hand-painted in Old English White, which is a faithful recreation of the heritage paint color that was used in the 1950s. The car is also fitted with bright chrome, including the matrix grille, and it runs on 22-inch hand-finished wheels with a black and polished finish, which is similar to the original R-Type Continental. Inside the cabin, the Cricket Ball leather provides a cosseting, deep and rich heritage feel for the driver and passengers, and it mirrors the hide color of JAS 949. Hand-applied piping in Beluga leather is used to bring accents to the seats and to preserve the design lines of the cabin.

The Burr Walnut veneer has been left as an open pore, providing a closer texture to the patinated finish in JAS 949. The open-pore veneer is painted with just three ultra-thin layers of lacquer, which total only 0.1mm in thickness. Bentley’s High Gloss lacquer coating is 0.5mm thick and has a smooth, glossy finish. The veneer is applied by hand, then sanded between applications to ensure that the lacquer sticks to the natural grooves of the wood. The resulting finish is wax-like and perfectly highlights the authentic, natural color and texture of the wood species.

Cross-banding inlays are still available today and reflect the interior details of JAS 949. The cross-banding of the new Continental GT Azure uses Australian straight-grain veneer with a boxwood inlay and is enhanced with a Bentley Mulliner overlay in gold, complemented by a rich gold fascia veneer and interior treadplates. The R-Type Continental silhouette has been added to the cabin’s exterior door panels and steering wheel center caps to complete the look.

The new Continental GT Azure is designed to enhance the wellbeing and comfort of the vehicle’s occupants, making every journey a relaxing experience regardless of distance. The seating is designed for driving comfort and control and all Bentley Azures feature the Front Seat Comfort Specification as standard. This includes multi-way adjustment, heating, and ventilation, as well as a massage function and a memory system for the driver’s seat. The car also features advanced sound insulation and noise-canceling technology to provide a serene cabin environment.

In summary, the new Continental GT Azure is a unique and one-off car that pays homage to one of the most iconic members of Bentley’s Heritage Collection, the R-Type Continental, JAS 949. It uses design elements from the original car and combines them with modern technology and craftsmanship to create a car that celebrates elegance, timeless design, and the wellbeing of the driver and passengers.
