Reviving the DEUS XTW200: A Tale of Transformation and Vintage Resurgence

In the hidden recesses of a forgotten shed, akin to wayward teenagers during the Summer of Love, lay a neglected TDub motorcycle, battered by time and adorned with salt and cobwebs. Despite its dilapidated state, a spark of determination between ingenuity and masochism ignited the desire to breathe new life into this forsaken two-wheeled companion.

I. The Resurrection Process:

Embarking on a journey of revival, the DEUS XTW200 underwent a meticulous strip-down, with every bolt either replaced or meticulously zinc-coated. The heart of the machine, its engine internals resembling a metallic confetti party, underwent a complete rebuild. A custom exhaust and a Keihin FCR carburettor were integrated to enhance performance and bring the TDub back to its former glory.

II. Frame Reinvention:

The bike’s frame, having seen better days, checked into the metaphorical operating room. Emerging with a sleek satin black powder coating, the frame was equipped with a board rack, marrying functionality with aesthetics. Both wheels received a makeover with new rims and spokes, sporting a lustrous champagne gold ceramic coating reminiscent of XT models from the late 70s and early 80s.

III. Suspension Overhaul:

The excessively extended swingarm that once plagued the bike was shortened, bringing a custom YSS shock into play to gracefully handle any undulating terrain. Up front, the forks underwent rejuvenation through rechroming, while the lowers were coated in powder to achieve an OEM finish, ensuring a smooth and controlled ride.

IV. Vintage Vibes in the Seating:

A shortened seat, sourced from Japan, underwent a metamorphosis. Re-foamed into a Vintage Motocross (VMX) shape, it was adorned in gripper vinyl and Alcantara, featuring red stitching and branding in the rear. This seat not only added comfort but also contributed to the overall aesthetic appeal of the revitalized motorcycle.

V. Aesthetic Accoutrements:

An alloy trackmaster-style tank, adorned in the iconic early 80s XT500 color scheme and graphics, was elegantly perched atop the refurbished frame, acting as a visual testament to the motorcycle’s vintage roots. In the cockpit, Protaper EVO tracker bars held the Motogadget Motoscope Mini and Mo.sign, seamlessly integrated into a bar pad dressed in gripper material matching the seat. Messner Moto throttle and switches, along with Motogadget grips, added the finishing touches to the bars.

VI. Illuminating the Future:

The final piece of this transformative puzzle was the lighting setup. Kellermann Jetstream indicators gracefully took care of directional signaling, while a Highsider bates-style LED headlight looked ahead, providing both functionality and a nostalgic nod to classic designs.

Every element, from the meticulously rebuilt engine to the vintage-inspired aesthetics, showcases the dedication to preserving the essence of the motorcycle’s heritage. This resurrection stands as a beacon for enthusiasts, reminding them that with skill and determination, even the most neglected bikes can ride again, echoing the timeless spirit of the open road.
