BMW R 18 “Iron Annie”: A Custom Motorcycle Inspired by an Aviation Legend

VTR Motorrad AG & VTR Customs in Schmerikon, Switzerland, have customized a BMW R 18 to create a unique motorcycle inspired by the iconic Junkers Ju 52 aircraft. The customer, who had previously commissioned an individual R nineT from VTR Customs, requested aviation-style elements to be incorporated into the design.

The R 18 “IRON ANNIE” features a speedometer integrated into the tank, reminiscent of old cockpit instruments, and access panels with quick-release fasteners found on many aircraft. The motorcycle’s design also includes the Ju 52’s characteristic corrugated aluminum planking, a seat reminiscent of a riding saddle, and a paint scheme in grey and black.

VTR Customs used a BMW R 18 First Edition as the base for the customizing project. The engine was removed and painted black, while all chrome parts were painted black, and the fork stanchions received a Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coat. Large 18 and 21-inch wheels were made by Kineo, and racing-style HC3 pumps from Magura were fitted in place of the standard R 18 brake and clutch fittings.

Artfully hand-formed from aluminum sheet, the fuel tank, the tail with the suggested tail fin of an airplane, the side panels, and the cockpit were created to mimic traditional metal aircraft construction. The replica cooling fins in the area of the rear silencers were a big challenge, as they needed to be shaped into parallel and beautiful radii while still being harmoniously fastened.

The R 18 “IRON ANNIE” by VTR Customs features shortened and DLC-coated fork stanchions, a height-adjustable Wilbers suspension strut, Avon Cobra tires, an ABM Vario Clip handlebar, and a customized speedometer by Zeitzone Zürich. The motorcycle’s saddle was created by VTR Customs and Yves Knobel Saddlery, and the exhaust system is from Walzwerk. The number plate holder is from Berham Customs, and the side indicator and rear lights are Kellermann Atto. The headlight is from HIGHSIDER, and the paintwork is a joint effort between VTR Customs and Freuler AG, Benken.

The R 18 “IRON ANNIE” by VTR Customs will receive road approval and is sure to turn heads in its new home on Lake Geneva. It is promised to remain a unique model for the customer.
