BMW R 12 nineT

In celebration of the “100 years of BMW Motorrad” anniversary, BMW has introduced the R 12 nineT, serving as the successor to the R nineT, which made its debut a decade ago to mark the 90th anniversary of BMW Motorrad.

The R 12 nineT follows in the footsteps of its predecessor by embodying a purist and robust classic roadster, offering an abundance of conceptual options for extensive customization and personalization.

Dr. Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad, emphasized the significance of the R nineT and its customizing concept, which revolutionized the Heritage experience for BMW Motorrad on its 90th birthday. The new R 12 nineT takes this legacy forward by embracing an even more classic and minimalist design language, expanded possibilities for customization, and the integration of innovative technology.

A century ago, BMW introduced its inaugural motorcycle, the R 32, which featured the iconic flat-twin engine. The boxer engine’s unmistakable design, commanding acceleration, unique power delivery, distinctive sound, and smooth performance swiftly propelled it to legendary status in the realm of BMW motorcycles. Carrying on this storied tradition, the new R 12 nineT incorporates an air/oil-cooled boxer engine. The model designation, “12,” denotes the engine capacity, echoing the nomenclature of numerous models throughout BMW Motorrad’s history, including the current R 18.

Building upon its predecessor, the R 12 nineT seamlessly combines the brawny character of the boxer engine, the design aesthetics reminiscent of traditional motorcycle eras, innovative technology, and a modular concept that grants riders unparalleled customization options. Stripped down to its essence, the bike exudes a strong emotional allure. The design process prioritized a purist and classic appearance, with meticulous attention to detail.

Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design BMW Motorrad, highlighted the purist design language, characterized by the clean lines connecting the tank, seat, and rear, reminiscent of the iconic /5 series or the legendary R 90 S from the 1970s. At first glance, the tank itself exudes classic BMW boxer tank styling, featuring the characteristic bend along the lower edge and offering a traditional knee contact point. The R 12 nineT also pays homage to 1970s BMW motorcycles with side covers in the frame triangle area, showcasing an authentic Roadster aesthetic.

The focus on intricate details is further exemplified by the revamped front mudguard, the LED main headlamp with a black-surround light guide element, and the pair of round instruments inspired by the vintage styling of yesteryears. True to BMW Motorrad’s tradition, an array of appealing customization options is available through the original BMW Motorrad accessory range. With customization in mind, the R 12 nineT incorporates an integrated LED rear light unit within the seat, facilitating the realization of a sleek “short tail” design.

The introduction of the R 12 nineT by BMW showcases their commitment to preserving the rich heritage of the brand while embracing innovation and individuality. With its timeless appeal and customizable features, the R 12 nineT represents a milestone in BMW Motorrad’s century-long legacy.
