Solgaard, a sustainable travel and lifestyle brand, has unveiled its first fully circular backpack made from recycled and recyclable materials. The Solgaard Circular Backpack has been awarded the prestigious 2023 Red Dot: Product Design Award, marking a significant achievement in innovative and sustainable product design.
The backpack’s mono-material design is crafted entirely from PET, the same material commonly used in single-use water bottles. This design presents a groundbreaking solution for technical soft goods that are typically made from mixed materials that cannot be recycled together. Disassembling such products for recycling can prove costly, often exceeding the recyclable value of the product itself. However, the Solgaard Circular Backpack’s mono-material design allows for easy and cost-effective mechanical recycling.
The backpack’s interior features protected storage for a 16-inch laptop, a tablet sleeve, dual carrying methods, a tracking device pocket, and customized organization pockets for eyeglasses, cables, and stationery. Meanwhile, the exterior design features a water-resistant exterior, a built-in luggage strap, a lumbar-positioned secret passport pocket, and a power bank cord pass-through.
The Solgaard Circular Backpack’s durability comes from its ballistic Shore-Tex® material, which is made from ocean-bound plastic and can be easily recycled alongside plastic bottles. This material is used throughout the backpack, including in the fabric, trims, labels, and internal cushioning.
