2023 BMW M3 CS

The 2023 BMW M3 CS is a high-performance vehicle that boasts a powerful powertrain and advanced technology. The car is equipped with a six-cylinder in-line engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. This combination allows for a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds and superior driving capabilities.

The engine in the M3 CS has been specially upgraded with technology derived from the race-car unit. The crankcase is made with a sleeve-free closed-deck construction, which makes it extremely rigid and suitable for high combustion pressures. Additionally, weight-saving cylinder bores with a wire-arc sprayed iron coating reduce friction, and a forged lightweight crankshaft aids power build-up with its high torsional resistance. The cylinder head is made with a 3D-printed core, allowing for optimal temperature management through the arrangement of coolant ducts, which would not be possible with conventional metal casting methods. The engine also features a system oil supply and cooling system designed to handle the challenges of track use.

These modifications have resulted in a 30 kW/40 hp increase in peak output compared to the BMW M3 Competition Sedan, resulting in 405 kW/550 hp. The increase in power was achieved through revisions to the engine’s M TwinPower Turbo technology, raising the maximum charge pressure of the two mono-scroll turbochargers from 1.7 to 2.1 bar, and model-specific tweaks to the engine management, without any concessions to stability or durability.

The engine in the 2023 BMW M3 CS produces a peak torque of 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) from just 2,750 rpm and sustains it all the way to 5,950 rpm. It generates maximum output at 6,250 rpm and tops out at 7,200 rpm. The drive torque is then relayed via the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, which can be operated using either the M-specific selector lever on the center console or the carbon-fiber shift paddles on the steering wheel. The driver can also use the Drivelogic button integrated into the selector lever to alter the transmission’s shift characteristics, with the choice of comfort-oriented, sporty and track-optimized settings.

The chassis technology in the M3 CS has been fine-tuned to the engine’s performance characteristics, overall vehicle concept, and weight distribution. The model-specific settings for the DSC system and M Dynamic Mode have also been geared towards the specific demands of high-speed circuit driving. The individually tuned axle kinematics and bespoke wheel camber settings, dampers, auxiliary springs, and anti-roll bars serve to optimize steering precision, the transmission of lateral control forces when cornering, spring and damping response, and wheel location. The electronically controlled dampers of the adaptive M suspension on the new M3 CS are also specifically tuned to provide optimal driving dynamics.
